18th variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943)

This hauntingly beautiful fragment is taken from Rachmaninoff's famous set of variations for piano and orchestra.  The work, which was written in America in 1934, is based on a Paganini caprice.  The composer made his own transcription for two pianos and this variation has become one of our favourite encores.
