Pianophoria No 3 Terry Winter Owens |
Pianophoria No 3 comes from a world described by the German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke. It is the world of an "horbare Landschaft", literally an audible countryside that gives rise to a "geusteste Ferne", an amazing space or amazing distance. Pianorphoria No 2 is a pontillistic, melodic work; at times fragile, at times rhapsodic. The melodic lines, stretching over many registers, create their own harmonies. There is no separation, in this sense, between melody and harmony. They are part of one fabric, a fabric which wants no biting or percussive sounds, even in the loud passages. |
The pianos belong to and are heard as a continuum of melodic flow rather than instruments of many registers. The contrapuntal registers grow out of melodic implications. The counterpoint has the quality of antiphonal choirs more than strongly contrasted elements. The phrases often lead upward and are suspended in mid-air before a new breath starts.
This work is dedicated to Claire and Antoinette Cann, whose artistry is transcendental. - Terry Winter Owens |
